Carmelite Sisters

The Carmelite Sisters’ apostolate of Catholic education, centered in Christ the Master Teacher, is rooted in the spirit of our Foundress, Mother Luisita.

  • In that spirit we create a joyful family atmosphere in our schools which fosters a genuine love for learning.
  • Emphasizing the formation of the whole person, we promote excellence through a rich liberal arts education.
  • In collaboration with families, we form students with a truly Catholic worldview that develops love for truth, virtue, and respect for the dignity of every person.
  • Students personally encounter Christ through prayer, academics, and relationships, thus learning to vibrantly live their Catholic faith.

Our History

St. Philomena Elementary School opened in September 1958 with Grades One through Four.  An additional grade was added each year, with the first graduating class in 1963.  By 1969, sixteen classes were in use with a total enrollment of 698.  In 1972, at the request of the Archdiocese, the school began a phasing out process, starting with the First Grade, until the school was single-graded again by 1984.

The Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles have staffed the school since its founding.  Currently six Sisters serve in various administrative and instructional roles at St. Philomena.   Outstanding lay teachers and auxiliary staff members fill out the mission-centered team serving  a culturally diverse school population.

– Current Family

“As a parent you have an extension, a village, within the school that supports and watches out for your child. The parents and staff here look out for not just their own, but all the children. We have created long lasting friendships here.”

-Alumni Parent

“That’s the way it should be – each one helping the other. It is one of the means of preserving unity in the family which is the important thing for us.”
